The Fulbright Program is the United States' flagship international educational exchange program. The program was founded in 1946 in the wake of a proposal by Arkansas senator J. William Fulbright to use surplus war property to fund "promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science." Fulbright fellowships now fund study and educational exchanges in over 155 countries.
