The Dust Bowl was the darkest moment in the twentieth-century life of the southern plains. The name suggests a place – a region whose borders are as inexact and shifting as a sand dune. But it was also an event of national, even planetary significance. A widely respected authority on world food problems, George Borgstrom, has ranked the creation of the Dust Bowl as one of the three worst ecological blunders in history....The Dust Bowl…was the inevitable outcome of a culture that deliberately, self-consciously, set itself [the] task of dominating and exploiting the land for all it was worth.
--- Donald Worster, Dust Bowl

Lesson 10:  Authors Write Strong Conclusions     For this lesson we suggest you use  The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant as  your mentor text, but it might be a good idea to read it earlier in the day so your mini-lesson doesn’t run too long for writing.   To start, write your own story in front of the students about going on a trip or having visitors.   When you end your story use a very simple and not interesting ending.  Then read aloud The Relatives Came  (or simply reread the ending together) and discuss how Cynthia Rylant ended her story.  Refer back to your own story and reread the ending.  Ask students to suggest ways you might make your ending better and more interesting for readers.  Display the Ideas for Powerful Endings Anchor Chart and discuss the different ways you could end your story in a more interesting or exciting way.  With your class, rewrite your ending to illustrate how much better the story can be.

In video games, "diegesis" comprises the narrative game world, its characters, objects and actions which can be classified as "intra-diegetic", by both being part of the narration and not breaking the fourth wall . [11] Status icons, menu bars and other UI which are not part of the game world itself can be considered as "extra-diegetic"; a game character does not know about them even though for the player they may present crucial information. A noted example of a diegetic interface in video games is that of the Dead Space series, in which the player-character is equipped with an advanced survival suit that projects holographic images to the character within the game's rendering engine that also serve as the game's user-interface to the player to show weapon selection, inventory management, and special actions that can be taken.
